The trick is eqing the send pre and/or post to shape the reverb to what you want to hear. I get really snobby about plugin based compression and eq.

I'm also not interested in wasting my time with this latest trend in convolution reverb, either. Also, being first and foremost a guitarist and starting off years ago with reverb as my first encountered effect (and often lots of it, too!), I realise there are many good commercial reverb plugins available - at all price points leading to sky high - but I simply refuse to pay for them anymore, considering all the excellent free ones to be had.

One thing I want to say that's merely a personal thing and based on experience is that I've always disliked plate reverbs, the software emulation even more distasteful to me than the hardware.
